The Problem
Stranded methane is natural gas that is uneconomical to capture and transport through pipelines. It is routinely vented or flared. Methane's global warming potential is ~28× CO₂ over 100 years and ~80× over 20 years (IPCC AR5).
Capturing landfill gas and burning it in a genset converts CH₄ to CO₂ — so it still emits a greenhouse gas. The defensible claim, for an operator who already flares: flaring already destroys methane but earns nothing; mining monetises the same destruction — roughly 28–80× lower warming impact per molecule than venting, with zero additional load on the electrical grid.
Canada has thousands of these sites. The data is public. The technology exists today.
